I am replacing an old shower unit. The metal drain pipe sticks up about 2 inches above the concrete slab. The problem is the new shower drain requires about 3 inches below the base to connect. Am I going to have to dig up some of the concrete in order to get the drain to fit, and then cut off the pipe? If so, what is the best way to dig it out?

Sounds like you have a socket-weld type shower strainer there (see 1st pic.).

I would suggest that you try to purchase a NO-CALK shower strainer for your application (see 2nd picture).

Here, the no-calk strainer slips OVER the pipe and allows the pipe to be about 3/4" below the finished shower floor... if nothing else, you may need to cut the pipe lower, but if it lines up with the new base, that is all you willl need to do... ;)

Purchase a No-Calk shower strainer (I suggest the BRASS strainer) and dry fit the shower base and strainer over the pipe... see from there.

If you need to cut the 2" pipe you can use a grinder with metal cutting wheel or a sawzall with metal cutting balde, but be sure to wear safety goggles to protect your eyes... ok?

Also, if installing acrylic or fiberglass shower base, be sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions on setting the shower base... most bases need to be set in a supporting bed of mortar or similar or they must be glued/adhered to the floor... so READ THOSE INSTRUCTIONS!!!

PS... if you use the No-CALK strainer tie the rectangle wrench provided with strainer (under the strainer cover in the picture) to a long piece of string in case it gets dropped into the drain when tightening the brass nut over the rubber seal!
