Hello, my name is Stacey and we have been in our home for 4 years and now our Lenox A/C unit is not working. This is what happens, we have the temp set at about 75 degrees and the A/C cuts on when the temp reaches about 83 degrees, but then it only stays on for about 25-30 minutes. This is not long enough to cool our house. We have a 2 story home with 6 bedrooms and 4 baths. The hallwy does not have any vents so we are thinking that is why it is happening.

It may just be a thermostat issue. Most hallways do not have supply registers, I'm not sure why you think that would be a problem? Does the system only start when the temp reaches 83? Or is it random?

It shuts on when it is at 83 and that is most of the time, it seldom gets down to the desired temp which is 75. It almost seems that it is struggling to cool the house, because the hottest area in the house is the hallway. I was just wondering because of the thermostat being in the hallway, will that cause the a/c unit to over work. Especially at certain times of the day when you look at the thermostat it is blank no temp, date, nor time is on the screen. Something I left out in the first question. Then within a hour, after the temp has to be at least 90 upstairs, it will kick on. Its almost as if the unit is cooling down then kicking back on.

Where is the nearest return air vent? Is it close to the tstat? Has this been a on going problem for the 4 years you have lived there or is it a problem that has just started?
Get a thermometer, check the temp of the cool air coming into the house,, then check the temp of air being pulled into the return vent,, then hang the thermometer beside the tstat,, compare with the temp reading on tstat

This has just started in the past month. If the return vent is a large square vent then that is right across from the thermostat itself. I will try an measure the temperature like you said, but the problem is when the a/c is on the thermostat screen will go blank and I do not have a ready. Then the a/c turns off and I do not have a reading on the thermostat, again it is blank. So, we wait until it kicks on again at that time it seems like 90 degrees, but it reads 83-85 on the thermostat when it finally comes on.

Did the thermostat go blank just recently... when this problem started? Could be just batteries. But the batteries generally don't affect the operation of the thermostat, the transformer in the air handler makes it operational. I think you need to replace the thermostat first. It's obviously not working correctly for some reason or another, if it goes blank. You could try a non-programmable thermostat, a mechanical one with no bells and whistles and see if that fixes the problem. Just make sure you get a thermostat compatible with your system.

I think it is a thermostat pronlem as well, you may try replacing the batteries, but usually most stats have a low battery indicator. Replace the stat and let us know.

We replaced the thermostat and the new one worked and then blanked out also, but we found out that the reason why it was not working is because of the drain was clogged and it was causing the floating device to trip and it turned off the thermostat. Once we unclogged the drain it stopped malfunctioning
