Its me again with my 3 year old grandaughter. I think she is getting too spoiled to the point that she whines instead of talking. We keep telling her to talk and not whine, but she starts crying and won't tell us what she wants.
It is exasperating because the "cries" drive us crazy.
How can we stop this whinning?? Neither one of my kids was like that, in case anyone is wondering...

Try giving a time out, if she is used to getting her way when she whines than you need to let her know she doesn't get anything until she asks nicely, I had a nephew just like that and if he wants something and I wouldn't give it to him he would start whining so we started timeouts and now he's a lot better

Here's my two cents... make sure you never talk to her with baby talk. Speak to her as you would an adult with an adult tone of voice. When she whines, tell her that you cannot understand what she is saying because she is whining. Tell her that when she can speak to you without whining, you will be happy to help her. Then walk off and go about your business. Don't give in, pick her up or try and coddle her. Be firm about it and make sure she knows that she will not get what she wants if she whines. If she starts crying, tell her that won't work either. Stick with it and she will finally play it your way. That worked for me with my daughter. Now, my mom handled it differently with her youngest granddaughter, my niece. Every time Abbey would whine, my mom would start whining too. It sounded ridiculous and it got the child's attention. My mom stuck with it and it drove the child nuts, so she quit whining just to get my mom to stop mocking her. Good luck.

D63P82 gave exceptional advise. That's what I was going to say!

My daughter whines when she is hurting or hungry. I have trouble understanding her and she has figured out that she gets much faster results when she speaks clearly.

If she whines get down to her level and tell her that you will not respond until she stops using a whiny voice. If she continues to whine, then ignore her, walk away into another room if she follows. Do not respond until she can use a non whiny voice. That worked for me and my daughter.
