How do I go about getting something exspunged from my record? It was about 20 yrs ago

excon is right. You will need the help of a lawyer and the wait can be as long as 6-9 months for this to be accomplished. Hopefully you have not had any subsequent convictions on your record as the Court will have to consider everything including the original crime in order to have your record expunged.

In addition to the above, remember that court records and arrest records are two different things. A lawyer can petition a court to have conviction records expunged for a variety of reasons. It is much more difficult to have arrest records expunged-they don't vanish if the court record is expunged because an arrest record is a record of probable cause made by someone at the time you were charged. You would have to show that there was no probable cause for the charge in the first place, obvously this would be more difficult than expunging a conviction record.
