I am needing information on the steps to take and where to begin to have a paper signed by my sons father to relinqish his rights. He is not on the birth certificate and does not have anything to do with him nor has he ever. He dropped me off at the hospital 2 years ago and haven't seen him since. I have since got married and we wanted to look into letting my husband adopt my son. Does anyone know anything about this kind of thing? Thanks.

What does your adoption Attorney say?

I have not consulted a adoption attorney yet but if my ex is not on the birth certificate and has never been asked for child support is there even a need for him to relinqish his rights. I wouldn't even know where to begin to find him if that was needed to be done.

Yes, there is a bio father just not being on the birth certificate does not change anything. A lot of mistakes all along, first you should have gotten a custody agreement years ago and a order for child support.
Most likely he will be glad to sign over when you find him.

But at this point you get an attorney who draws up the paper work and try to find him, if after a good search he can not be found, it gets published in the paper for notification.

If he refuses to sign, at that point you file for child support and back support, and when he has to pay 100's a month often they are more willing to sign over their rights.

The first thing you need is a lawyer. Adoptions are not possible with out them. Fr. Chuck explained the steps toward it well but you have to have a lawyer.

How long have you been married? At least a year is needed in most cases

Has your child's father been adjudicated as the father, as in a Paternity test?

If not that needs to be done first.

Ok, here's the problem. Before a court will grant an adoption, it wants to make sure the bio father is willing to relinquish his rights. So even though the bio father is not on the because, the court is going to want you to get him to sign over his rights. From what you are saying, it doesn't sound like he would be unwilling to do so.

Adoption laws vary from strate to state. You don't have to be married, in some places, in others you need to be married for a period. This is why you need an attorney. They will prepare the adoption papers, get the relinquishment signed and let you know what requirements you have to fulfill.
