My boyfriend wants to straighten out his life
My boyfriend spent 7 years in prison, but has been out almost as long. He is having a hard time getting his life back together and I am curious as to any ways I can help him. Are there ways to help him get some rights back? Can he obtain a driver's license? Find a job other than killing chickens or the occasional construction job? He is a good man who messed up while young. What can we do?

He can get his driver's license. Don't see anything stopping him from getting one. As far as his job situation is concerned, there are a lot of jobs out there, but he's going to have to try a bit harder and go to more job interviews to get a good job.

    Hello t:

The only rights he lost is the right to own a gun and to vote. He doesn't need those rights in order for him to get his life back together...

An expunged record isn't going to help either...

He's going to have to get GOOD at something. When he applies for a job, the employer has to WANT his services. He should apply to places where he can TALK to the hiring manager instead of just submitting an application.

He IS MORE than his record, but he has to learn to PRESENT himself as such. Maybe a new suit and tie would help. Maybe cleaning out under his fingernails would help. Maybe an English lesson would help. Maybe a professional resume would help. Maybe going at 8:00 in the morning to knock on doors and not stopping until 5:00 in the afternoon would help.

It's MY experience that people only care about your record if they DON'T want to hire you. If they LIKE you and NEED your services, your record isn't sooooo important any more.
