Desperately trying to find childhood book

I am looking for a children's book that I bought in Scotland
It is about a young boy who is taken away from home and sent to a remote school on an island somewhere in north Scotland.
It is full of strange, funny characters. I remember a strict headmaster. He also finds a Bookman creature who lives on top of the book piles in the library.
I remember that the librarian is fired for some reason, or resigns.
The book I seem to remember is about his various attempts to escape the island school- on the cover I think there was an illustration of him in an aeroplane or something. I remember that he has a friend/ accomplice who has experience in trying to escape. They lived in a dormitory called Nettles.
There were various, stylistic and humorous illustrations throughout the book.
What I can't remember is the title!!
The book was called something like:
The Adventures of...
The Life and Adventures of...
The Extraordinary Life of...
The Extraordinary Life and Adventures of...
The Extraordinary Adventures of...
And the name of the main character was something beginning with E (I think but am not entirely sure)
Something like Ennid, ennis, edward, edwin... hmmm
The book cover was blue, and published by someplace in Edinburgh which I believe is no longer there.
PLEASE SOMEBODY HELP ME FIND THIS BOOK
