He probably isn't getting enough exercise during the day. All dogs big and small need an outlet for their energy or else it turns into either aggression or anxiety. If you can not take the dog for a walk during the day yourself you may want to ask a friend or a neighbour to walk him for you.

I agree with rex! If my dog does not get at least 45 minutes of exercise a day - she is very restless and can even become destructive. I have learned that regardless how busy or tired I am, those 45 minutes are key to everyone's sanity. We go to the dog park a lot, she spends an hour chasing all the dogs around and sleeps like a baby all night! Everybody is happy.

I did not say you didn't walk your dog, how would I know? I am suggesting that a dog who does not want to sleep and is whining is lacking exercise and a proper release for his energy level. If, as YOU said you are the only one tired when you get home from your walk then your dog is NOT getting enough exercise. I am curious, did you disagree because you really think your dog who whines and is awake day and night IS GETTING ENOUGH EXERCISE? Obviously you are not happy with the suggestion, but Jack Russells are known for their energy level and the dog is left alone much of the time...

I totally agree with what every one else said here. But your dog could also need some other type of outlet. I would HIGHLY recommend that you try taking him to a dog park where he can run free and socialize. Let him play there for at least 1 hour/day. You could also try taking him somewhere that he can swim that is great exercise. If none of this works try a lower calorie dog food.

Please do not give negative ratings to perfectly valid ideas from people who are trying to help you! This is especially true when not enough information is supplied to illustrate related circumstances.

I have read about this problem in dog training books. The author talked about this kind of problem, which a number of his clients had with their own dogs. All of them were gone during the day. Being alone all day, the dog gets bored and lonely, and he decides to sleep it out. This way he's awake when his owners are home, even if they are sleeping. It sounds like he needs more attention during the day! Where do you put him to sleep? Is he in a kennel or in a separate room?
