    Is this happening in Explorer?
Can you right click on the drive in explorer and hit properties? If so, does anything come up?

The operating system you're running, and its version

A list of any changes that either happened or that you perhaps made to your computer around the time that the problem started; particularly any software or hardware that you installed or setup

Thank you for replying, I can select properties on my home pc and I get the following:
When I select properties I get the properties window, the file system RAW, it says used space, free space and capacity "0 bytes 0bytes"
Under PROPERTIES-hardware I can select the properties window and it gives me the device name and type and tells me it is working properly. Under the VOLUME tab everything is "-". Under th POLICIES tab it is optimised for quick removal.
This 80Gig HDD had 32 files on it.

The operating system you're running, and its version
PC: Windows XP home edition version 5.1 Laptop Windows Vista.

The only thing added was this hdd, it was recognised by the computer and driver was installed.

You have to format that drive to be able to use is it as the files system is RAW

When you boot the laptop, does XP or Vista come up

But it does look like you have a blank external drive - is this a new drive?

If possible please supply as much information as to descibes your problem or question if it applys to request.

    Vista on the laptop
    XP on the PC.

Not new, it had 32 films on it. Is it really blank?
i am tempted to format it and try again.

Depending on how much info on drive is important, you can try to recover files
Sites do state that this can recover info from RAW drives

    EASEUS Data Recovery Software
EASEUS Data Recovery Wizard: Advanced and Best Data Recovery Software for Windows system and FAT16, FAT32, NTFS drive.
