    Cordless power drills-how to buy
What do you look for when buying a cordless power drill? I've purchased one in the past that I thought was powerful, but won't even drive a screw through a wood plank. It's nothing more than a light duty screwdriver. What kind of specs should I look for?

The best I know, is talk to construction people, contractors and other trades people whom use tools for a living. Get what they use... good luck...

Cordless drills are marketed by the voltage of the battery pack. The higher the voltage the greater the torque or power. Also the higher the voltage the heavier and larger the battery pack. They just add more batteries in the battery pack to increase the voltage. Then you get into brands and that's mostly a personal preference. The size (voltage) that best suits your need is something only you can determine. The latest thing is the Ion battery packs which give the most power, the longest life and the least weight. Everything is of course priced accordingly. Harbor Freight sells a very good handy man cordless drill for $15 when on sale (almost always). It is not a contractor grade tool but is actually a very good tool. It only comes with one battery pack and is a 3hr recharge time but for $15 what do you want. I have about 6, just for the convenince of not having to walk to the shop or to the truck when I need a drill.

Voltage, however, remember that the larger batteries weigh more, and can cause fatigue if used for long periods.
