16.5 OHV Briggs on Craftman Riding Mower
As mentioned, I have a craftman mower with 16.5 OHV B&S. Its only about 5/6yrs of age, good shape. It does start up, but runs rough, backfires and blows quite a bit of white exhaust. Blows much more white exhaust at lower idle before stalling out. I have cleaned carb, changed plug, fuel filter and new oil. Any suggestions on what it could be? Head gasket? Valve problems?
    Thanks

hmmm, white smoke = oil burning.
remove the air filter cover and tell me if there is oil in the air filter housing. If so you have either a "stuck" or malfunctioning breather assembly. The breather assembly is located at the end of the small black tube that runs from the air filter housing to the engine. The small rectangle shaped box is held on with two small bolts. Replace the breather and the gasket if there is oil in the air filter housing.

Be patient, we help folks at on our own time and do not get paid. Therefore this is not something we do as a per say "job". It is simply something we do to try and help others. And spare time is something that none of us can actually make, we just have to find it.

Thanks for your reply, appreciated. I have already taken the air filter out, checked, cleaned and there were no signs of oil in that area. I replaced plug, gas filter as well. Took float off carb and everything seemed to be working well. Although, I don't think the "idle" screw is adjusted properly(do you know adjustment?), but don't believe that is the main issue.
    More suggestions?
    Thanks
