Light spotting at 6 weeks pregnant, no heartbeat detected
I went to the er last Thursday due to light spotting and they checked my hcg levels and said they were in the 9000 range. Also did an u/s but did not detect a heartbeat. According to the measurments I am 5 1/2 weeks. Went back on Sunday and my levels had dropped to the 8000 range. Another u/s done, still no heartbeat. Was told to see my ob gyn asap. Called them today and they can't see me for another 2 weeks. The er dr said my cervix was still closed but he thought I was going to miscarry. I had a miscarriage last year and I am 41 years old. Is there a chance that I am just not far enough along for them to hear a heartbeat? I am not cramping, my bleeding is not even filling up a panty liner. I really want to know what is going on but feel I am getting the run around. Should I return to the er in a couple days and have them check my levels again instead of waiting 2 weeks to see my dr. I really feel that they should be checking my levels every 2 to 3 days seeing as how I am at a high risk for miscarriage again. Maybe they can put me on progesteron to help me along. But again, can't seem to get anyone to listen. Please help. :(

And yeah you should go up to the Er because if it is a miscarriage they can suck it out

Your hcg levels will fluctuate quite a bit, but you're still within range at 6 weeks. I'm sure your doc has told you that at 6 weeks, you should be around 1000 - 55,000.

Also, hcg levels aren't really the "it" factor in determining pregnancy, so you shouldn't be putting too much bearing on it. Not detecting a heartbeat at 6 weeks is common, so another u/s is in order in a few days.

However, I would do everything to move your obgyn appt a bit earlier, and there's nothing wrong with having your hcg levels tested again.

It's impossible for me to say whether you'll miscarry, but what you're currently going through is not uncommon.

The bleeding is very light. Not even soiling one panty liner a day. And no pain whatsoever.

Thanks isneezefunny! I went to our health dept here and found out I was pregnant. I am unemployed so I had to wait until I could get on medicaid before I could set up an appt. that date is 7/14 so I haven't even seen him yet. I started bleeding last Thursday. Went to the er and they said to see my ob gyn asap. I tried calling them today and they said they could not see me until 7/14. Not even to get in to see someone else. So I called every ob gyn in my city that takes medicaid and no one can see me earlier than 7/7. I am so frustrated. I just think that if someone could see me now and check my levels again and tell me what is going on I would be more relaxed. I went through this last year and let it happen naturally and it was very bad. I bleed very bad and was in the hospital two days. Don't want to go through that again. If my baby is dead, I just want something to be done. If it is not and it is just too early to hear the heartbeat I want someone to tell me that as well. The waiting is killing me and my fiancée... who has no kids! I am 41 and have two. I feel so bad for him!

No heartbeat at 6 weeks, as I said, is normal... really. I've seen patients in clinics that didn't hear the heartbeat until their 10th week, and their worrying was evident.

As I said, at 6 weeks, to say whether you'll miscarry (from here, anyway) is impossible. The obgyn will have a better opinion on it. If you're too worried, and another hcg test will make you feel better, then go all out... all I'm saying is... you're at 8000... if you've been dropping continuously, you may be at 5000 - 7000... in which case, you're still within range.

I suggest getting that appt for 7/7, as early as possible, and call back every few days to see if anyone's canceled or moved their appt.

    Best wishes.

Thank you soooooooo much. I feel better now just being having someone to listen to me! I will call my obgyn everyday to check for cancellations. And as long as I am not have any pain and my bleeding is still very light, I will try to stay positive.

Remember, stress affects the body more than you think! As of right now, there's not much you can do until the obgyn appt or the er for another blood work, so in the meantime, try to stay healthy, eat well, and take your prenatal vits.
