DVD Playback Problems with New HD TV
I recently treated myself and bought a brand new Westinghouse 42" LCD television. I brought it home, set it up, and the picture is beautiful.

However, I am having some problems with playback of certain DVDs. I have always used a Playstation 2 for DVD play because it always seemed to work well. Admittedly, all I had before was a 24" standard format television. When I first tried to play a DVD on the new TV, I put in MASK OF ZORRO and it worked great (this is the premium version of the DVD, remastered for digital clarity or whatever). TERMINATOR 2 works great also (this is also the remastered version, called the EXTREME DVD or somesuch).

However, when I try to play DVDs with much simpler pictures, the image distorts, flickers, and stretches, kind of like when you used to get a bad picture on an old VHS tape. Sometimes it's just annoying, other times it's nearly unwatchable. I'm 95% sure it's not the TV: I get a great picture with some DVDs, I have no problem when I run a PS2 game on the Playstation, and I get a beautiful picture when I use the Wii on this TV. I've noticed that it only seems to do it with DVD playback on the PS2, and not always then. I even spent extra on the premium cables for the PS2 and Wii, just to ensure that I get the best picture possible.

At the moment, I'm leaning toward buying a new DVD player. I'm thinking that I might be having this problem because the PS2 is several years old and the signal on some of the older DVDs might not be compatible with the new TV. (In other words, the PS2 might have worked great with a small, standard-format TV, but I might need a more premium player for the new premium TV.)

Does anyone else have any ideas? I'd hate to spend the money on a new player only to discover that it doesn't fix the problem, but that's the best guess I can make right now.
