How do I do research on 401K benefits that are lingering out there? I had a job back in 1998 and I had a 401K plan and do not remember what the carrier name was and may have benefits out there just sitting. First, try contacting your old employer and ask who the plan administartor is.

If tat doesn't work, since you haven't received a quarterly report from your old 401(k) for some years, chances are that they have decided that you were lost, and by law they should have turned the assets over to the state.
