    Adult Birth certficate spelling change
I am an adult. I was born in California, but now live in Oregon. My parents started spelling my first name different than my birth certificate since I was 5 months old. All my legal papers: s.s card, drivers licence etc all are with the different spelling. I need to know how to change the spelling of my birth certificate as it is needed for passport, renewal of driver licence and other things.

You can go to court and have your name legally changed to whichever one you want. Its not just a matter of getting the birth certificate cahnge, name has to be changed.

What did you use as ID when you got the SS card? They were looking at a birth certificate in one name and gave you a card in another?

I realize you would use that SS ID for other ID purposes and the problem would continue but I don't know how it happened in the first place.

At one time, you could change your name simply by consistently using the new name. And, in this case where it's not even the name that's being changed, just the spelling (Rebecca vs Rebekah, for example), that's probably what the parents did.

JuyKayTee I received my SS card when I was 16. I did not need my birth certificate. I do not why but it was not required. At that time I did not know of the difference in spelling. That is why all legal documents of mine are Spelled Sean not Shawn for my first name. Thank you for the response.
