I'm in a similar position but retired with a reverse mortgage on a cheap small house. I see no way at this point of even making my minimum payments on $80K (mostly from emergencies and medical problems, no luxuries). Does anyone know if I could lose my house because of these debts? The only money coming into my checking account is a small SS retirement check, which I believe is unattachable, and I have no savings or other assests. I'm hoping any liens just sit until I die & the bank takes my home? Anybody? I'm so scared.

Should be moved to its own thread so it isn't skipped over.

I thought once you had a reverse mortgage you no longer owned the home, the bank does/did. Perhaps in partnership with you but check the papers you signed. A lot depends on whether you have a home equity reverse mortgage, a line of credit, what form you took.

In most cases SS cannot be attached but the money you receive from the reverse mortgage can - it is not protected funds.

If you owe $80,000, yes, there's a possibility somebody will move against the house - but then the issue of ownership will come into play. And, yes, people can file liens against the house but they can't act on them until you die - again, depending on the type of reverse mortgage you have.
