I got caught stealing over 100 dollars of stuff, was supposed to pay a fine, but didn't. This was over a year ago, and nobody has called me or mailed me telling me to pay the fine. I was under 16 when it happened, and it was my first offense. I am now trying to get a job and am worried they may do a criminal check and it will be on my record. I don't know how first offenses work; do they even show up on your record? If you were under 16? As much information as possible on this would be much appreciated.

They can't release a juvenile record. However you should pay that fine or that will bite you in the bootie in the future.

That gives me great relief, except I forgot to mention that I am in Toronto, Canada. So does that still apply?

Ok Canada law is called Youth Offender and it depends upon how you were sentenced. If were sentenced as an adult then the record is not sealed at all.

The victim has a right to see your record, presumably indefinitely.

The victim is not prohibited from talking about the crime so there can be no full sealed data due to this fact.

However read on:
"A cornerstone of youth justice in Canada is that, as a general rule, the identity of a young person should be protected. The rationale is that publication of the name of a young person would impede rehabilitation efforts and detrimentally affect young persons and, in the long run, compromise public safety. However, there are certain exceptions.

Under the YOA, one exception is that the publication of information that identifies the young person is permitted if the young person is transferred to adult court. A result of this provision is that the identifying information can be published before a court has determined whether or not the young person is guilty of the offence. This result is considered by many to be unfair to the young person.

Under the YCJA, the identifying information cannot be published until a youth court has found the young person guilty of the offence and imposed an adult sentence."
