I noticed my central air wasn't cooling the house off. I went outside and I could hear it, but I looked and the big fan on top wasn't moving. What could the problem be why it isn't other than it is broke?

Is nothing running? The fan nor the compressor? If nothing check for kicked breaker,a/c and furnace,if you turned them off completely and then back on and still not working check for voltage at unit, low and high voltage,, if good look at the capicitor,, someimes you can notice the top swelled up and not flat where the terminals are, if you have low voltage the contactor will be pulled in and probably humming, that will be good if its humming,, JUST BE CAREFUL ELECTRIC BITES
... Yes, it is making noise outside where the unit is, but the fan is not moving. Well, I just checked it and it is now. I put the thermostat on fan on continually. It doesn't seem to be any cooler in here and not as much cool air coming out of the registers. Not as strong either. I know it takes awhile to cool, but it has been running for over an hour and it hasn't changed. I don't know how to check for anything that you mentioned. The circuit breaker seems to be okay.Quote:

If the compressor came on and tripout then the coil, fins, should feel at least warmer than its casing. If the fan seized it won't spin freely, to check: turn off the power and use a small stick or water hose to spin the bladeQuote:
