I have medium brown hair with about 30% gray... would I have to bleach to go to a soft dark blonde color?

Don't take my word for it, but I am under the impression that if you're going lighter (more than a few shades) you have to bleach. Not all the way, but to an extent. I think it just depends how long you keep it in. I do know of sun in but I don't know if that's bleach or what. Good luck.

I don't think you would have to bleach. If you bleach then you will probably get a lighter color than you really want, especially on the gray strands. My advice would be to find a very light blond dye and dye it with that... that way, you won't go down to that shade since you have medium brown already. Or, if you really desire the perfect shade you could probably bleach it then redye it the shade you want... but I would avoid bleaching if it's not necessary.

I am a stylist... if your hair has never been colored and is a light to medium brown you may be able to get the color you want without bleaching. However , you have to be really careful what you use . The box colors are never a good idea because you need to think about the base of the color you are using and the natural base of you hair. You'll need to go to a beauty supply store ( we have sally's here) and have the clerk help you choose a color. A lot of them are actually stylists and will know what to do.
