    Hi:

    I need to know the word(s) people use for this:

    Some companies sometimes ask their employees to take some time (a week or two) off without pay when the employers are running out of money.

    The term used is

    "LAY OFF "

    In your case , it is temporary lay off.

    Yes. I agree with Leo. This is the situation where an employer lacks either money or raw materials to meet their daily process. In that case they go for this. So the term LAY OFF is used and if it reaches the extreem level and the company ends up with severe problem and come to the state of closure then its called as LOCK OUT.
