My craftsman 18hp rider-model # 917-273402 seems to be stuck in gear, therefore it won't start. The linkage is OK, the dead mans switch seems to be OK, and I cleaned up a small build-up of grass. Any other things to check. The clutch/brake pedal also seems OK.

Try having someone rock the unit back and fourth as you apply the clutch (about half way down) and attempt to move the shift lever.
