Most are located on top of the fuel tank.

Does the CEL come on and go off after 2 seconds, when the ignition switch is turned to ON? During this interval, do you hear the main relay click and the fuel pump run?

Let me add that I have never seen a bad Honda fuel pump, even though I've known many people who have replaced them thinking they were bad. The problem is usually with the electrical system; e.g. blown fuse, failed ECM, or bad main relay. If you haven't already checked all under-dash fuses with a test light or multimeter, here's how to do it:

Check the fuses carefully, since it can save you a lot of time and money. Before replacing the fuel pump, try jumping the appropriate terminals on the main relay to see if the fuel pump runs. On many Honda main relays, Terminals 5 and 7 should be jumped. I'm not sure if this holds for 1987 Civics or not.
