How do you obtain legal insurance protection in the event a pit bull should attack someone?
Unfortunately it should be covered with home owners insurance but they now exclude dangerous breeds from being covered.
Between how complex it is and not knowing what state you live in

It really depends on what state you are in as mentioned before. I know in my state my good friend's homeowners insurance covers their doberman and ours covers our rottie. The thing is that the insurance company has to know what type of dog it is and you have to take the legal steps of putting up beware of dog signs. You have to have them on your fence facing out or on any nearby trees to the dog house if you don't have a fence. You can also put one outside the front of your house but not all policies require them. But as said it really depends on what state you are in because some states have restrictions on some breeds.
Yes, your first stop should be your insurance agent for your home owners insurance ( or your renters policy). If they will not cover the dog you may have to try and buy a separate policy
