The machine has about 2500 hours on it.
It is powered by a Briggs & Stratton 18 HP Vanguard V-Twin

The engine is backfiring and flooding out.
The spark plugs are black and sooty.
You can see the gas coming out of the carburetor

The engine has a new fuel pump .

I have cleaned the carburetor and am fairly competent it is free of dirt.
Its almost like the float is sticking..

    What can be wrong? V-Twin

If the engine is backfiring, it may be a timing or valve problem. Check the flywheel key to make sure it is not sheared. Check the valves for proper adjustment.

:) You are a good man SkipB

You were correct on the valves.

The valve gap on the 2 exhaust vales were set at .015 & .018 and the intakes were .010 & .008.
They call for .004/.006. I reset everything and it run great.

    Thanks from the sandlakefixer

It evidently wasn't the case here, but I thought I'd pass on the following (limited) experience:
I had a similar situation with the same engine (mounted in an Argo ATV) -- the problem turned out to be a detached magnet on the flywheel...
