I have looked in many other posts for the answer to this issue, but have not found it, so sorry if this is redundant.

Here's how I made my connections, advice I got from this site and from Home Depot:
-Red and white wires from ceiling to red and white on the one side of the receiver
-Blue and white from other side of receiver to fan's blue and white wires
-Black(hot) wire from fan to ceiling black wire
-Other black from receiver is capped
-All grounds are connected properly

With these connections, the fan's pull strings will control everything, but the remote will control the light only, not the fan. The Home Depot guy I spoke with suggested the receiver had a short, so I tried another receiver from the same model (I had bought two fans) but got the same result.
My home is brand new construction.
So my connections must be off, but what is the fix?

Your wiring is not correct.

Red and white from one side of receiver to red and white from ceiling.

Blue, black and white from fan to blue, black and white from other side of receiver.

Your wiring suggestion is how I originally wired the fan, and when I did that, the remote would operate neither the fan nor the lights. Wiring the black from the fan directing to the ceiling black was advice I read on this site.

Clarify what wires you have from the ceiling and from the receiver. Based on what you posted above, the wiring I gave you is correct.

Or, try this: connect the red from the receiver to the black from the ceiling.

AND always make sure you have both wall switches left on in order to control the fan from the remote.

The wall switches are in the on position. Here's what I have
-from the ceiling: ground, red, white, black
-from the receiver: red and white on one side, black, white and blue on the other side
-the ground wire from the mounting bracket connected to the ground from the ceiling

So connecting everything color to color does not work (with the black wire from the ceiling capped off). Connecting the black wire from the fan directly to the ceiling - and capping the black from the other side of the receiver - will allow the remote to control the light from the fan but not the fan speed/on/off.

Try bypassing the remote receiver entirely. Wire black to black, blue to red, white to white. Do the fan and light work independently from the two wall switches?
