Try going to windows search engine. It's usually called "find". Type in the name of the file and follow the rest. What you downloaded is probably still on your computer. Also you can check the downloads folder on xp and vista.
Finally, when you download, select the folder that you want the download to go into. Not every file has an auto extract capability. And the file will be there. Good Luck!

Which Browser are you using ? IE ? Try to use another browser like Firefox or opera.

IE default download folder in Vista is

    C:\document and setting\your username\download

If Firefox or opera , downloaded files will save on your desktop.

    I hope it will help.

    Thanks

I have the same problem! I know it's not just the files, because I have an Excel file that is updated weekly by my teacher (for homework), and it's worked every week until now. I also can't download/install anything from the internet. I've had my Windows Vista computer for a few years, and this has never happened before.

Omg me too! I have vista and right now I can't download ANYTHING! Like it'll load and the bar will go to 100% but after that when I click run/save it just goes away and doesn't respond. I'm thinking about wiping my hard drive and reinstalling everything since my computer came with the disks but I don't know if I should, what I can't dowload again

I have the same problem. I have vista home ed. When I try to download an attachment from an email, it will not open or save. I cannot download any files from a web site. I have "searched" for the file names, and they are not there.

This has happened right after removing a virus (vista defender). I used the "restore" option in vista to get rid of the virus. My PC seems to be running fine otherwise.

    PLEASE HELP!

Actually I have that problem too but when I download things a "download" window pops up and all I have to do is pause the download for a little bit and then resume the download and it will work... my problem with this method is that sometimes the download is too fast and I can't pause it in time... for those downloads I usually have to download on a different computer and transfer with usb =(
