I want to know what does it take for DHR to let a father have custody of their child

Welcome to AMHD. What state are you in, and who has custody now? Also, how old is the child?

Im in the state of Alabama the child is 1month old and who has custody now is a friend of the family.

A parent who is fit, not a danger to the child, has a right to custody - if the mother is unable to parent the child, that is why the child is with a friend, then the father definitely has the right to prove he CAN parent the child and obtain custody -

Of course, father has to prove paternity and mother can fight for custody (as can the family friend) but they would have to prove him unfit.

Just curious: Is DHR involved? Has anyone filed a petition in court?

For any parent to obtain custody they newed to file a petition in the local Family Court. The best course of action is to get an attoreny to represent him.
