I know there is a drain plug at the bottom of the sump, but I bought a hand siphon pump at Autozone recently. I am disabled and getting under the car is problematic. Anyway I use a 1/4 clear tubing and insert it in the filler tube and start the siphon. It's real slow, so I leave it overnight. I use a plastic bottle that I mark every 1/2 quart with marker. Water (2 cups) and mark the level. That way I can readily see how much oil or fluid has been removed. No mess. No fuss. I think this would work very well on riding mowers.

There is also a twist, pull valve on the side of the engine on some troybilts where you hook on a hose and do not make a very big mess. Be sure to check for a filter.
