Bed slats are usually 3/4" thick and 2' or more wide. Slats should be cut to fit tightly between the bed rails to keep them form moving around. You can always drill a small hole in the ends, put them in place, then drill a hole in the bed rail so you can insert a screw. The screw doesn't screw into the bed rail, just passes through the hole to keep the slat in place. The rail is hardened steel therefore you need a Cobalt bit to drill. The wood can be any thing. It doesn't have to be very strong, because the weight of the box spring is almost over the bed rail.
