    As automobile-related fatalities soared in North America, public outcry provoked legislators to begin studying the French and German statutes as models ("Better Auto Laws Are Now Needed").

    On August 1, 1910, North America's first driver licensing law went into effect in the U.S. state of New York, even though it initially only applied to professional chauffers. In July of 1913, the state of New Jersey became the very first state to require all drivers to pass a mandatory examination before receiving a license.

    Hope this helps you.

    Is this homework? The "rules" specifically request that you not ask homework questions - if you're smart enough to find this site, you're smart enough to ferret out the answer on your own.

    I should have known to ask that exact question first before answering it. My apologies.

    Trust you're not apologizing to me, no need - and, hey, I learned something myself!

    It's just a policy because there are people out there who would never do their own homework, just ask questions all day.

    You can always tell who is in the same class because they post the same question. Actually, I always find this rather amusing!

    isaiahamowtz disagrees: It did not proceed to answer the question and was sassy and without curtesy!

    You disagree with what? You disagree that you aren't supposed to ask homework questions? You disagree that you can find this site but you can't find info on US Drivers Licenses?

    This is a volunteer site - I am under no obligation to answer your question(s) to your satisfaction. The info I posted was correct - you are not supposed to ask homework questions on this site. Maybe I'm wrong and you spend your free time wondering about the Driver's License requirements/laws in various States - but I highly doubt it... and I have very good instincts.

    And, you, Isaia, should read the rules of the board and follow them - particularly giving people "red" marks. You are the last person to be giving me lessons on courtesy -

    Helloe to all;

    Tennessee was the 32cd State to accept and enact the drivers license law .
    And it was in 1937.

    The first Drivers license in Tennessee cost 50 cents and required no test.

    The first Test was not given until April 19th , 1938.
