While replacinging a first floor ceiling I discovered that the bathtub on the floor above had corrosion around the outside of the drain opening. I have temporarily siliconed the area to prevent any leaks which seems to be holding but I would like to permanently repair the rusted areas before I put the new ceiling in. Short of replacing the tub in its entirety is there any product on the market that can be used to make this type of repair. I have seen advertisements for epoxy type sealants but really don't know what I should be looking for or whether they would work.

Where do you see the corossion on the tub drain.. At the TUB SHOE.. At the rubber gasket area.. Let me know.

Seems to be a metal covered with vinyl or acrylic

If it's metal then it's a steel tub with porcelaien enamel finish. If it's a small opening then remove the drain and clean the area and patch the hole with a metal/epoxy such as Fast Steel which can be located at any hardware store. Patch the hole and one hour later it cures and is ready to reinstall the tiub drain.. Run a small rope of plumbers putty or Silicon Jel under the lip of the tub drain for a seal and install the drain back in to the tub shoe. Good luck, Tom.

As I have complete and easy access to the bottom (floor side) of the tub shoe from the floor below can I apply the Fast Steel from that side and still obtain a seal which will hold?

It would depend on where the hole is. If it's near or under the drain lip the epoxy should be smoothed out before it sets and cures and fine grain sanded after it does. This exoxy's dark but if it disturbs you they do make a paint for porcelain finishes, However, if you're asking if you can just stuff expoxey in the hole without loosening the drain, again, it would depend exactly on where the hole was. Just clean the area up around there so it has something to bond to. Good luck, Tom
