I have a pop-up drain type that I'd like to replace but cannot figure out how to remove it or for that matter if its even possible to replace it. Please help, thanks. Jeff

Hi straka:

You just lift up and spin unit until you can see and then loosen the screw. See the picture below... ;)

Then if you wish to completely replace it you will need a tub removal tool similar to the pic. Below. To remove the complete strainer assembly. You can also use two large crisscrossed screwdrivers set into drain to loosen old strainer.

Now that you know how to remove this and clean this... I don't really see a reason to replace entire unit... but if need more info. On that subject let me know and I can go through step by step with you!

Mark.. I checked for the set screw and my unit does not have one, though I wish it did as this would have been much easier. Do you know how to go about removing it if there is no set screw? I've tried rotating it several times but it does not come out. Thanks again. --Jeff

Hi Jeff:

I hate to say this... but you may need to climb into the tub and lay down flat to see this set screw!

It will be FLUSH with the metal at the center stem and is NEVER easy to see, not even for experienced plumbers! Sometimes I swear the screw isn't there either... but it always is!

Anyway, double, double check with flashlight and maybe a compact mirror at an angle and see if can find the set screw.

Checked it out and there is definitely no set screw. Checked via mirror and on stomach. I think it might be from what I can find, a roller ball drain? Though I am not sure how to remove a roller ball drain..

I do apologize for making you crawl on your stomach for no reason! :p

I have never even heard of a roller ball tub drain, so a first for me here!

According to my search on roller ball tub drains (see pic.) all you need to do is turn this stopper counterclockwise to remove it.

However, in further investigating it seems that you need to take a pair of needlenose pliers or similar tool and hold the stem under the stopper so you can rotate the stopper out counterclockwise. If you don't hold the stem, this will turn counterclockwise forever..AS YOU KNOW ALL TOO WELL!!!

Let me know what happens here! Maybe I will learn something with you... ;)

Found that you after removing the cap there is a slotted screw that must be removed. Once done the whole plug and stem comes out as one piece.
