I heard that hyperterminal to test the modem is not available in Vista .How can we test the modem in that case apart from modem validity ?

I use the free PuTTY for all things serial/console.

You can also access the modem properties in device manager, select the diagnostics tab and choose query. You might need to be logged in as an Administrator to do this.
