At 19 1/2 weeks pregnant I was informed by my doctor that there was no fluid around my baby and that it's kidney's were not working and that it had a bowel obstruction. I was then sent to a specialist who confirmed these findings and informed me that nothing short of a miracle would save my baby.. The specialist pretty much urged me to terminate my pregnancy and only gave my baby a 3 percent chance of survival. But in the same conversation he told me that during the ultrasound he saw a trickle of urine come from the babies bladder. I chose to continue the pregnancy. Is there anyone out there who has been through this? They say there is nothing that can be done medically for my baby but with all the technology today I find that so hard to believe. Does anyone have any thoughts on this? I know there is someone who has been where I am. I am now 24 weeks and the baby is still growing and I can feel it move from time to time. I'd really like some feedback.

I am not sure why they would not perform an in vitro surgery to remove the obstruction, but I am not a doctor. I will pray for you and keep your baby in my thoughts. I hope it will be okay.

I would get a third opinion, someone out there must be able to do something. Like Charlotte said, why haven't they done invitro surgery and removed the obstruction? Are they giving you meds to stimulate lung development so that you baby can be delivered early? What if anything are they doing? Time to make them do something, that's what I would do.

If there were NO fluid surrounding the baby, the pregnancy will terminate on it's own. However, if there is LITTLE fluid (oligohydramnios) there is the possibility of increasing the amount of fluid by instilling sterile saline into the placenta. However, this is only done on very rare occasions and ONLY done by a high risk OB doctor.

Now you face the possibility of having a child with lifelong chronic kidney failure as well as the bowel obstruction. Very rarely will they do in vitro surgery to remove a bowel obstruction when it can be done immediately after birth.

It is the kidney function that concerns me the most. Most likely this child will be on dialysis it's entire life or/until it can get a kidney transplant.

I'm sorry to sound so grim, but these are the facts of the situation you face.
