See what you guys think. We bought windows from a company and paid lot of money. One of the things they raved about was the fact that if the hardware, seals, glass breaks they will replace it for free for the time we own the windows. I get the warranty card and that states labor costs on it. The salesman did not say anything about these labor costs and if they had I probably wouldn't have bought the windows. I called and talked to a woman about this and she said the 1st 2 years after that we would get charged for labor. I am hopefully going to talk to the sales manager tomorrow but I wanted to get your opinion on this. I also rechecked on the contract where they wrote what windows we are getting and at the bottom it even states all that is guaranteed. Do you think that this is right?

Unless the installation *caused* the problem, then paying the labor charges are normal.

The wndow itself may be covered, but someone has to do the repair work. I would not expect labor to be covered unless it is specifically mentioned by the salesperson. Did the sales person say "Everything will be replaced at absolutely no charge to you?" Or did he say "the glass, hardware and seals are all guarenteed and will be replaced at no charge if there is a defect."

Yes unless the actual contract says warranty labor included or the actual warranty says labor included normally it is not.

You needed to read the warranty paper work and the contract prior to signing. Does not really matter what the people say, since normally most contracts state that the written contract not any verbal addition is valid.

Sounds like you bought from one of those super sales company not a home town contractor. You can normally get a better warranty from your home town contractor who will often include his labor even if it is not part of the contract to keep a customer happy.

Also basically at this point you don't need to talk to anyone in sales, you need to talk to a general manager.

They never mentioned it had to be a defect. Matter of fact, they said even from normal wear. They even rave about if your kid throws a ball through the glass they will replace it for free. I questioned that many times and they still insisted for free. They never mentioned that after 2 yrs we would have to pay labor costs. Maybe I expect too much but when someone says something will be free I expect it to be free. They claim they do not subcontract the work out so it is all their own people. Like I said I will be calling the sales manager tomorrow. Thanks for your input.

Fr Chuck, there was no warranty papers given to me until the windows were installed. When they wrote the proposal out they wrote that every thing is guaranteed for life. It did not have specifics. Yes, I did get it from a big company. They got us with a 3 hour presentation, everything looked good, and we decided to do this. Our old windows had a lot of drafts coming through them so we figured this would help in the long run. I'll know better next time.

Anyway, I talked to the sale manager and he said he didn't want his company tarnished by this one issue so therefore has marked my folder/paperwork to have a lifetime guarantee with no charge to anywork. Wel, actually, I talked to the original woman and she realted the message to me. I asked them to send me a something in writing that states that so I have that for my records. Something does seem a little fishy why he took my word for it without actually talking it over with me but as long as they make good on the deal, I don't care at this point. Yes one of our competetors in the medical supply company advertises on TV that on one product if you get "certified" and it does not get paid for, you get to keep the chair.

Well I would like to see a list of anyone that actually got a free chair.

There are always clauses and the such.

A real word of advice always review all of the paper work, before you sign anything, if they can't show you a copy of it, odds are there is a reason they don't want you to see the written paper work

I'll try to remember that next time. I realize I need to look at all the paperwork. After 3 hours I still should have told them we would think about it but we knew the kids still needed lunch and naps and I needed to get to work. I wasn't thinking too clearly (another reason we shouldn't have gone with it). It should work out to my benfit in the end but I just hope everything works fine until we sell the house so we don't have to worry about it.

Yeah, I would too. I know there are gimmicks and things out there trying to get our business. I will just have to be more careful.

Jduke, I'm a DIY for everything, cars, house, electrical, computer, etc... I had to be. Unfortunately, in America today, all that is important is 'finding ways of getting your money'. I truly hate to say it as the USA is the greatest country in the world, but virtually all American business seems to be driven by greed. My experiences have been (and this is after reading all paperwork and severely questioning the contractor) that even if you paid them twice what they ask, you still end up doing it yourself, or correcting their mess. I even sometimes let them tell me all the work they are gonna' do and ask them to go into detail pretending like I know nothing... most of the time I get stupid info they try to snow me with. Of course I don't hire them, but it's eyeopening what passes these days for 'experts' in their fields. I'm certainly no expert, but have had to have my hands on mostly anything enough to fix it myself.
