    1040 NR moving expenses
    Hi,

I am from India, My status was

    F1 (Jan 1, 2005-May 31, 2005)
    F1-OPT (June1, 2005 - Oct 31, 2005)
    H1b (Nov 1, 2005 - Dec 31, 2005)

    1) I am planning to file 1040NR, I can claim standard deduction $5000 and personal exemption $3200, am I right?
    2) I moved from GA to DE for my job, If I claim moving expenses (form 3903), what receipts do I have to show/attach? I didn't know that I claim that, so I seemed to have misplaced most of the receipts. Will they accept if I put an "estimated amount"? For example flight ticket from Atlanta to Philadelphia will cost at least $90, shipping of all my stuff will cost $300-$400, rental car & hotel for the first day will cost at least $100, can I use these numbers instead of real numbers?

Just for information, I was not reimbursed any amount for my relocation.

    Thanks a lot in advance.

    1) You are correct.

    2) I would prefer you use the actual amount spent, not juist estimates. However, if the estimates are not outrageous (and the numbers you cited seem reasonable), that should be okay.

    Thank a lot ATE.

Just a few more questions, some people say that I should not include first day hotel & rental car, can I include that? If I cannot, what expenses I can include?

I am trying to get my credit card statement for that month to get the actual amount. Should I have to include that statement?

If I use the estimated amount, what evidence should I attach? I don't want to take risk.

    Thanks a lot again.

    GTG974P:

Attach nothing to the return. The additional paperwork only invites questions as to the validity of the expenses claimed. Again, if your expenses are reasonable, the IRS will not question them.

Your sources are correct. You cannot claim the first day hotel or rental car.

    The allowed expenses are:

    - cost to move your personal effects.
    - cost to store your personal effects while you are house/apartment hunting.
    - cost of lodging (but NOT food) while in transit from old to new location.
    - cost to move your car (either the cost of gas and oil, or a mileage rate at 15 cents a mile if the trip is before 1 September 2005, or 22 cents a mile if after 31 August 2005.
