Thanks for any help that can be given...
Whenever I press the flush lever on my toilet the toilet will flush, the bowl will fill and drain, and then the bowl will fill and drain another 2 more times before the tank begins to fill. So in effect my toilet flushes 3 times for every one time I press the lever. I don't have any other plumbing issues (that I know of) and as far as I can see it looks like all the parts in the tank are in good condition. Any ideas?

I think it may be that you have TOO much water in the tank. I would have you start to fix this by first reducing the water in the tank.

If don't know how to reduce water level then please let me know what the inside of your tank looks like... the top pic. Or the bottom pic..

Also...tell me if any work has been performed on the parts in the tank....? That could be important here.....OR has it always been like this?? And also, how old...?

In regards to your other questions, I just bought my house in January and the toilet has been acting like this since then. I would guess that the internal parts are 3-7 years old based on condition. I don't know any history past that.

OK, it's definitely the top diagram, the "400A". I didn't see a float on the flapper. I also didn't see your post until this morning, so I wasn't able to get the manufacturer name, sorry.

No problem! You have a Fluidmaster ballcock. Answer Marks questions firs and then to lower the tank level, pinch the adjustment clip and move the float can down until the desirerd level's reached. The tank level should be 1 inch below the top of the white overflow tube. Good luck and let us know it it helped. Good luck, Tom

Like Tom said... pinch the adjustment clip and slide it down to reduce the water flow if needed. As he said, should be about an inch or so below the overflow pipe.

If that is all right and water is set at about 1" below the overflow pipe....then this can be one of ther following:

1) They changed out the fill valve and the flapper and water level was set to within 1" of overflow pipe BUT, in your case water level should not have been set so high because say... your tank is a 3.5 gallon or similar and this triple flushes because flapper rides height of water column for too long. So here, reduce the water flow by pinching the clip and sliding it downward.

If that did not reduce the water enough to reduce flushes then you will need to shut the water supply to the toilet and then grab the VALVE BODY (see pic.) in one hand and the gray circular sliding clip (see pic... clip is across from the words ADJUSTABLE HEIGHT) in the other hand and pull UP on the clip (pulls up about 1"). Then push the valve body down an inch or so, then slide the clip back down into place (you will hear a CLICK sound to be sure it is seated) and turn water on and see if that hepled to reduce the number of flushes.

If that didn't improve dramatically and seems can go lower, just repeat the sequence just noted.

2) If these things don't work, may be time to purchase another flapper or two and try them out here. May just be the wrong flapper for your setup??

Adjusting water levels are so easy that you should play with this a bit... then if that fails try the universal flappers.

Hi. So my toilet is a Kohler. The adjustment clip was down almost all the way so I moved the valve body down and got it to fill and drain only once! I really do appreciate everyone's help on this. I do have another question now: Since I moved the valve body down the Critical Level line is about 2" BELOW the top of the overflow pipe, is this important? (hence the word "critical") It seems to me that my options are to 1) cut the pipe down below that line or 2) try changing flappers and thereby be able to move the valve body up, or option 3) is..?

As long as the height of the overflow pipe is below the level of the hole in the tank for the toilet HANDLE, then you are all set!

The overflow pipe must be set below this hole or if the fill valve fails water will come out the toilet handle hole and flood the bathroom before going into the overflow pipe... a bad thing!

You could also change the flapper, but if toilet is flushing properly and removing all solids, then I say you leave well enough alone!

My toilet is the first type (400A) and flushes 5 times before stopping. I tried the first fix and was able to lower the water level by an inch or so, but that didn't fix the problem.

Then I tried the second technique but couldn't raise the gray circular sliding clip at all - in fact, I couldn't find this "sliding clip", but there's a screwing clip, which I screwed down a bit. This also didn't do anything.

It was obvious that the problem is the flapper. There's too much water rushing in at the bottom, pushing the flapper up for too long, and hence the 5 flushes before the water pressure is low enough for the flapper to close back down.

So finally, I turned the water supply off half way, hoping to reduce the water pressure. That seemed to have worked partially, as it now flushes 4 times instead of 5.

Also, this toilet flushes rather loudly, due to the louder water refilling noise than normal toilet.

Any idea how to reduce the flush to once or twice, and perhaps to reduce the noise to a normal level? Thanks!

You are correct that it's the flapper not the fill valve that is the problem.

That logic is incorrect. Assuming that you have a rubber flapper valve with the open ball underneath. The open ball traps air. That air makes the flapper float until the tank is emptied. So it is not the amount of water or the water pressure that makes it float.

If your tank holds more water than is need for a single flush you need a flapper as shown below that employes a float on the pull chain. That way you adjust how long the flapper stay open based on water level.
