I don't know much about car audio so this may be a dumb question but if I have a kicker sub and a boss amp dose it really matter all that much that I don't have a kicker amp to go with my sub.

The big difference is your stereo or head unit. That controls it all. So if it stinks then your sound will also. Almost all amps are Universal so the work with almost all subs, unless it is compitition grade equipment. Hope this helps.
