Porch roof ridge beam dripping sap
    Folks,

About 4 years ago our house went through a renovation project which included a new screened-in porch. The porch is post and beam construction, of cedar wood. We noticed this spring, for the first time ever, sap drippings on the table and chairs on the porch. The sap is dripping from the ridge beam. The entire porch was stained with clear oil based stain.

Do any of you have suggestions on what to do to stop the dripping? Also, any thoughts on how to clean the tacky drippings from the table (black painted aluminum) and seat cushions?

    Many thanks,

The sap can be cleaned off with mineral spirits. Its odd for a beam this ld to start dripping sap, it should be bone dry by now. Are you 100% sure it is what you think it is?

    ballengerb1,

It looks like sap, it's a tacky as sap. I don't know what else it might be. I've tried using a citris based cleaner, but that isn't cutting it. I'll try the mineral spirits.

    Thanks

I have sap suddenly coming out of a post in the attic/loft of a post and beam barn that was put up in 1987. Recently a tornado passed close to our area, like another county away. I'm assuming it's just low atmospheric pressure drawing it out. Could spray with WD-40 then wipe off/scrub with a pot scrubber. Put used rags away safely we all know solvent and pitch laden rags can start fires. I mean your furniture, don't spray the woodwork itself.

    ballengerb1,

Thanks for the tip. The mineral spirits did the trick, taking the sap completely off the table and chair seat.
