    Getting back apartment deposit
    Hi,
I filled out an application form and handed over the first month's rent, plus application fees and money for credit check (total of $1270 in cash) to hold an apartment in NJ. Something urgent has now come up and I am unable to rent the place anymore. It's been less than 24 hours, do I have the right to get my money back? I have not signed the lease yet. Please help!

    Thanks,
    Jamie

Strange that they would accept the money, but not have you sign the lease.

Not sure exactly, I would guess that without signing the lease, there has not been a binding agreement, however, they have your money?

Did you receive a receipt for the payment you gave them?

If they refuse to give you a refund, it will be up to you to sue them to get your money back, and that amount should be within the limits for small claims.
