We read it in 8th grade--and then it became a movie--I am thinking in the late 80's. It was about a group of brothers being raised by the oldest brother--i don't remember what happened to the parents, but they were not in the story. Some of the specific details of the book--I remember that one of the boys rolled his cigarettes in his shirt sleeve, one of the boys killed another boy (not his brother, but someone else) and left them lying under the street light. One of the boys in the story was named, or nicknamed Dallas. I am thinking that the title is "the _____ boys" or just "the ______". Please help--I have been racking my brain all evening! Thanks!

Yup, "The outsiders" written by S.E. Hinton, she was just a teenager when she wrote this book. :)
