The Repairman that came to look at my central air unit told me that it was probably a 24 volt transformer and I could fix that myself. I have no idea where to even look for it (but I do know ahtm it looks like).

Is it in the outside unit?. furnance downstairs?,

Furnace downstairs. If you do not know what you are doing let the repair person do it.
