I've submitted form 843 to get refund back for the social security/medicare tax that I shouldn't pay for the last year (F1 student/OPT). How long this will take? I've submitted all the documents since 2/15/2008 but haven't heard anything back since then.

Wait for another 2 weeks and then call IRS to find the status of your Form 843.

Thanks so much for prompt answer. Do you know what number I can call IRS? I've tried so many number last month but it seems like they are only automatic system to provide status of 1040 filing.

Hi, I did not get my refunds back yet for the year 2009. I filed my form 843 in April 2009. Can you please let me know if you received the refunds.

You should post your question as a new post. Give more info, you visa, type of return (which Form) filed in 2007 and 2008. When did you file your 2008 tax return?

I filed my 843 form for refund on my 2010 social security and medicare tax on 03-22-2012 but have not heard anything yet could you tell me anything about them like when should get it.

It takes AT LEAST three months to process the Form 843, but it CAN take up to a year.

The average wait time is six months.

I submitted a Form 843 for a Canadian doctor in mid-September 2010, and she got HER check last week.

I am in the same scenario and hence didn't start a new thread. I filed form 843 for refund on social Security and Medicare tax in April 2016 and haven't heard back. I didn't receive a notice either to follow-up. I am clueless how do I follow-up and check the status. I am not even sure if my mail was received. Appreciate your help. Thanks!

Prior to 2014, submissions of Form 843 could take up to a year to process.

However, with budget cuts and manpower shortages, the processing time is probably a LOT longer now.
