I have a weeping cherry tree that I planted about 3 years ago. The trunk must be a very slow grower but the limbs are everywhere, dragging the ground. The trunk is now about 4' tall and the thing just looks like a big bush. When is the proper time to trim these limbs back and how far back is it OK to trim them? I don't want to kill the tree, I think some day it will be a pretty tree. Can someone help?

I have one of those. There's a variety of ways to trim them but my preference is to trim it to look like an umbrella. They're quite hearty so you can go to town with it and make it as you wish - presuming your cuts are at junctions.

I like to do my trimming just after the blooms and in the late fall just before or after first frost.
