Hi everyone!

I am a professional photographer, and I recently acquired a Canon EOS 40D, my first time working with digital cameras. After my first job using it, I transferred the photos to my computer and, very stupidly, didn't put them in a CD.

So something I never saw happening, happened: all those images simply DISAPPEARED from that folder, and were nowhere to be found, as I searched over and over again (they weren't in the trash can either). The folder was still there, but it was empty. Imagine how I felt.

Desperate as I was, I used some file recovery programs.The good news is they found the files, but after I recovered them, they wouldn't open. They're JPEG images, they have the same size, same names as before, but they won't open ANYWHERE.

I would be very thankful if someone could help me out with this...

If I try to open it on the regular windows visualizer, they say "visualization not available. If try other programs, such as photoshop, I get a message saying the file has an unknown or unavailable JPEG marker.

Can you post one of the images here? Is it small enough?

The smallest one is 3mb, so I can't post it here... They're like 10 megapixels, and I can't even reduce them now, obviously...

Someone told me something about file headers, but I don't even know where to begin managing that stuff, and this "jpeg recovery" program I found was too expensive and wouldn't recognize the files either when I tried it out...

Can you post one of them on photobucket and post the link here so I can take a look. Worth a try.

Have you verified that they are .jpg saved?

I just downloaded your uploaded image and it looks to me that
Your download from camera to your computer may have been
Corrupted.

Do you still have the pics on your camera?

If not then it strongly looks like your images are lost :(

blairwtsn, the thing is the images were downloaded to the computer just fine, and I did a lot of work on them for a whole week, so some of the files weren't even the original ones I had in the camera. So the problem surely was on the computer, because all of the files in the folder (from the camera and the ones I had worked on photoshop) disappeared...

And no, unfortunately I erased them from the camera, hence my desperation

Without a proper header in your jpeg, your toast. Fortunately, you can trick your files into working by inserting a working header from a known good jpg into your own.

Here's a link to a page that give step by step instruction on how to do it. It looks like a lot of work, and will feel that way the first time. By the time you're on your 3rd pic you should whipping through it quickly.

Just remember, even though your files are corrupted, back them up NOW before you start tweaking.
