Problems like that seldom go away on their own, and I doubt anybody here knows more than your vet. Your vet has checked to make sure you are feeding him a dog chow for a complete and balanced diet, brush him regularly, and avoid baths as much as possible?
Are baths contributing to his hair loss?
Even with extensive rinsing and adding conditioner, baths leave the skin dry and irritated. Much better to just not bathe the dog at all, usually unpleasant for man and beast. I can't say baths are the problem, but they can only make it worse. Many dogs have skin and coat problems even with a good diet, regular brushing, and no baths, but it is still the best way to go.
Oh, I should have suggested getting a second opinion from another vet.
I know what's wrong with your chow chow! Your pet has internal fleas. I've had a chow before and mine also had this problem. I ran into a family a few years back, taking their chow to the humane society as they could no longer afford the medications it takes to get rid of the flea problem... Take your chow to a vet that knows chows & their various problems, he will tell you it's an internal infestation and the dog needs to be treated medically or the hair will fall out.
