OK. This may be a really dumb question but being my first pregnancy and never really being anywhere near someone who has given birth I don't know what happens to the umbilical cord after it's been cut. Do the doctors push the left over cord into the mother or does it come fully out with the baby once the baby's born?

The umbilical cord is attached to the placenta which is how the body filters all the needed nutrients from your body to the baby. After giving birth to the baby, the cord is cut and then you "deliver" the plecenta which has the cord attached to it.

Weird. It's like 2 deliveries then.

The umbilical is one of the weirdest things I have ever seen. Your hospital may even ask you if you want to have a look at your placenta after delivery. I passed on that little novelty.

It comes out.
The doctors will make sure all of it comes out right after the baby is born.

For me,I had to push just like when I was having the baby.

Yeah it's like two deliveries, but I heard it's not as painful.

I watched a friend of mine give birth and had "prime seats". I saw everything despite trying not to. Anyway. She gave birth to her baby girl and then she gave birth to the placenta. She pushed like once and it basically fell out of her. Kind of gross but the doctor checked it out asked if she was interested in seeing it or keeping it. She said no and it when into the black back that all the "mess" was going into.

The placenta should come away from the inside of the uterus with the cut umbilicus attached, yes it is like a second delivery although you won't feel much or any pain at all. The placenta will be checked for colour and completeness by the nurse. Your baby will have the remains of the cord, pegged which will dry and fall off after a few days. The remainder will be the belly-button.
