Always has been in my experience. I assume we mean he kicked the ball into the other teams goal or in other words the goal his team is defending.

I appreciate your answers. One would think this will be a legal own goal. However , I read in our media lately that this goal can not be awarded based on the fact that in case the (OFFENDING , GUILTY ) side has benefited from his mistake and in fact won the goal. As a rule, people should NOT benefit from their mistakes. Does this make sense to anybody?
Personally, I think it is an own goal.
