    Broke a lease in 2001
I signed a lease in February or March of 2001 for an apartment in GA. In July 2001 I lost my job and in August 2001 I moved out of the apartment breaking the lease. In January 2002 I moved to TN. On 5/19/2008 I received a letter from a collection agency in GA stating that they were going to file a civil lawsuit against me for over $4,000 on behalf of the apartment complex where I lived in July 2001. Isn't there a statute of limitation on collecting old debt? Does it apply here? Thank you.

I think its 7 years, and that is why they are doing it now, LAST MINUTE!

I believe that Georgia's statute of limitations is 6 years, which means that they are too late. A lot of collection agencies will threaten to sue even though they are beyond the statute date because they hope that the debtor will not know about the statute and will make arrangements to pay.
