If you truly want to be someone's friend, you will keep phone time to a minimum until AFTER you have developed a connection with them. After that time, conversation is easy, including on the phone.

Don't talk too long. Hanging up while you two are still doing well is a good rule. "I have to go in a minute, so what was that last thing you were saying before I go?"

It's not so much a trick to talking on the phone, it's about actually caring about the person you're talking to. If you care, the questions are real.
